Doug Fir District
Membership

It is the function of the Membership committee to assist  the units it serves to develop, maintain, and retain Scouts in its various programs.  This is done through a variety of programs and methods.  They are:

Recruiting
It is important for every Scouting Unit it be recruiting year round.  Every boy and Venturing age girl deserves a Scouting program.  Your membership committee and District Executive are ready to assist in building membership in your unit by:

  • In School Recruiting
  • Open houses
  • First Niters
  • Community Relationships
  • School Surveys
Contact them to develop an action plan to grow your community Scout program.

Transition

There are two places where we lose Scouts; between 5th grade Webelos and Boy Scouts, and at 14 years of age.  There are places where their leadership lets them slip through the cracks by not helping them get to the next logical Scouting family.  Granted, we will lose some to sports, cars, and girls, but if we do our best, we can help them continue their Scouting experience.

Tips for Leaders

  • Have good relationship with a unit your boys can transition to.
  • Have leader assigned to transitioning boys to Troop or Venturing Crew
  • Know and understand the Webelos to Scout Transition guide.
  • Know that 14-20 year olds need different experiences than 10-13 year olds and help them find it through Scouting.
  • Have a list of units that your boys can transition to.
  • Follow up and make sure he is still active with the unit you crossed him over to.
  • Start a Troop or Venturing Crew in your neighborhood.

New Units

New unit development insures the future of Scouting in America.  Them membership committee and your District Executive are continuously building relationships in your community to establish new service stations for Scouting.  Churches, schools, service clubs, youth organizations, community groups, sports teams and clubs, government agencies, concerned citizen groups, military agencies, fraternal organizations, student unions, and any other body can partner with the Boy Scouts to bring a fun character program to our youth.  Please contact our committee or District Executive with any information on groups desiring Scouting or who you think deserves Scouting in their program.

Recharter

Recharter is the renewal of charter agreement between the chartering body and the Boy Scouts of America.  It is a renewal of membership as well.  This is when we collect annual dues, applications, submit paperwork, and renew our commitment to the youth we serve.  The following tips will help your recharter process be smooth:

  • Get the recharter packet early from your commissioner or DE
  • Go to Recharter Training
  • Start and finish early (by Nov. at latest)
  • Cross off only those dropping from program.
  • Make appropriate changes to addresses, rank, phone etc.
  • All new youth and leaders require a new application signed by leader (do not just write them in on the charter)
  • Make sure your Charter Rep and Committee Chair sign all Adult applications, The charter agreement, and the charter itself
  • Submit one check to BSA for recharter
  • Have it reviewed by DE prior to turn in

Please use your commissioners and Executive Staff to assist you.  Recharter can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it.
Good Luck!
