  • Never, ever be alone with a boy.  Make sure he has a buddy!
  • Do not start working with a boy unless he has a Merit Badge Card, signed by his leader saying it is okay to begin work on that particular badge.
  • Make sure you understand the material, Merit Badge pamphlets are available at the Council Service Center Scout Shop.
  • Make sure boy does all the work, to the letter.  If it says describe, that's what he does.  If it says make, that's what he does, etc.
  • No substitutions for requirements
  • It is the Boy's responsibility to earn the badge, not yours.
  • Half the experience is working with people outside the boy's circle, make sure he gets the opportunity to work with lots of people, not just the same ones over and over again.
  • Sign the card only when the boy has completed the requirements.
  • Keep the counselor record for your self.

Thanks go out to all those great leaders who work to build boys into men!
