Community Organization Award

The Community Organization Award (COA) is presented by seven BSA national chartered bodies that are also national community organizations. The COA honors those who, through their dedication and work, further the BSA's Scouting program—whether by helping charter Scouting units, serving as volunteers in the development of those units, and/or furthering Scouting through leadership in and support of youth outreach in their respective organization.

The organizations awarding the COA are as follows:

  • The American Legion's Scouting Square Knot Award and certificate are designed to recognize American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion members who are actively involved in the Scouting program. It recognizes dedication and work by the member to assist in furthering the Scouting program in The American Legion. For more information, contact The American Legion, A/C&Y Division, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206, or e-mail acy@legion.org.

    Marvin M. Lewis Award

  • Approved by the Grand Lodge in 1998, the Marvin M. Lewis Award recognizes dedicated members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks who have significantly contributed to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the programs of the BSA. Nomination forms are available from the Elks' national headquarters: Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, 2750 N. Lakeside Ave., Chicago, IL 60614-1889. The award consists of a neck medallion, the BSA square knot, a lapel pin, and a certificate.

George Meany Award—medal and square knot

  • The George Meany Award is a national recognition approved by the executive council of the AFL-CIO. It may be presented to any adult union member who has made a significant contribution to the youth of the community through Scouting. The purpose of the award is to recognize the recipient's outstanding service to youth through the programs of the BSA. Each AFL-CIO central labor council or each AFL-CIO state federation is permitted to give one award annually. Paper applications may be obtained from AFL-CIO central labor councils (see www.aflcio.org/aboutunions/unioncities/ for a list of the central labor councils), state federations, or a local area's AFL-CIO community services liaison. To date, several thousand members of the AFL-CIO have been presented this award.

  • The Scouters Achievement Award of the Veterans of Foreign Wars recognizes VFW Scouters on the organization's State or National Scouting Teams who have met a number of service, training, tenure, and performance requirements and whose documentation for the award has been reviewed and approved at VFW national headquarters [406 W. 34th St., Kansas City, MO 64111; phone (816) 756-3390]. The award consists of the BSA square knot and a certificate. The mission of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Scouting Teams is to support the programs of the BSA within all VFW departments, districts, and posts by promoting shared values of volunteerism, Americanism, and youth development.
